Alias GUI

Alias - PS2 (2002)

Graphical User Interface

These screens were part of a small hacking mini-game in Alias whereby the player used a small black box device to gain access to computer terminals. Once they had control of the computer they could open nearby doors to allow them to progress further into the environment.

The cube in the centre of the screen rotated in real-time and responded to button presses from the user. The player had to guess the correct sequence of button presses to make the cube assemble and unlock the computer.

Since these screens were mostly static in nature I created everything in Photoshop 7.0 The desktop in the background was a large bitmap which I cut up into small textures and the window system that was overlaid was painstakingly constructed from a series of brushes that would enable me to create windows of any size with the minium of graphics.

since these screens would be accessed in-game they had to be as memory friendly as possible.

In-Game H.U.D

Alias featured a rather large in-game H.U.D system that encompassed a fully working PDA, inventory, weapon management and FPS viewpoints.

To maintain uniformity and to aid planning I created a layout for every single screen in the H.U.D system using Photoshop. In total there were more than 100 layouts. From those layouts the artwork could be easily chopped up and put into our custom GUI tool.

In-Game Pause Menu

To help her on her missions, Sydney Bristow carries with her a small PDA that provides information such as current position, inventory items and so on. Created in Photoshop 7.0

Console Controller Buttons

This is a contact sheet of all the controller buttons that were used in Alias that I created. While not the most creative of art tasks they still have to made and remain consistent with all the other art elements that they will sit beside. All the buttons are vector line art and are entirely scaleble, created in Photoshop 7.0

In-Game Pause Menu Early Concepts

Before arriving at the final look for the in-game menu system I created several different designs and layouts, these are two of the early concepts which lead to the final version used in-game.

Alias GUI
Hacking Mini-Game Early Concepts

This was the first visual design of the hacking mini-game. Ultimately it was not 'hi-tech' enough to be in keeping with the rest of the games visuals so I reworked it to come up with the final design shown at the top of the page.
