Half-Life2 Concept Art
Half-Life2 Logo
Half-Life2 Concept Art

This image was created to demonstrate to Valve and EA how Half-Life2 would look like if it were running on a next-gen console in high-definition. The overall goal here was to try and keep to the original design and construction rules for Half-Life2 since the next-gen version would be built using existing tools and technology. Since geometrically the fidelity of the world environments would not be increased significantly I focused more on lighting and shaders.

I modeled the environment and props in 3DS Max 7.0 and painted the textures in Photoshop CS2. Lighting is created using a Radiosity solution and the soft area shadows and lighting is baked back into the textures so it can be easily recreated in real-time. The coloured tints around the windows and lights are done with semi-transparent colour cards placed in the scene and oriented towards the camera.

This is the wireframe scene geometry. As you can see the fidelity of the scene is quite low, instead all of the environment detail comes from the surface shaders, textures and lighting.
